Stop Government Waste and Reform Pensions

Two obstacles stand between our state budget crisis and recovery: government waste and state pension abuse.

We need to stop government waste. Illinois’s state is nearly insolvent, but the state of Illinois is still wasting your money. Governor Quinn recently gave pay raises to staff. We have the duplicative Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity which fails to advance either commerce or opportunity, but still costs us millions. The 2010 budget included $6,500 for giant tubs of live fish at seminars and $10,000 for a Batman movie gala. We can’t afford this irresponsibility.

Equally important, pensions must be addressed. These commonly abused and poorly managed state pensions must be reformed. We need to protect fair retirement benefits from those who abuse the system–abuse that costs us all. As your new representative I’ll propose leading by example, ending the lucrative pension system for politicians in the General Assembly.

We need to stop the waste and reform pensions before we ever consider raising taxes… and if we can accomplish that, we may not have to.

Tom Morrison understands important economic issues first hand.
As a business owner, he’s created jobs. He knows what it’s like

in Illinois have serious consequences for all of us. Tom understands,

Citizens of Illinois are suffering. The state ranks 48th nationally in economic performance and slow population growth will cause us to lose a congressional seat next year. Illinois is above the national average in unemployment. These are consequences of a chaotic, fiscally irresponsible state government… raising fees and threatening to raise taxes at every turn.

We need a stable state were people feel safe to invest and create jobs. The best economic development starts with a well-run state, not gimmicks and stimulus packages.

Tom supports choices for children in need. Tom wants the best education possible for our children, and he believes that empowering parents to make educational decisions is the greatest way to accomplish this goal.

Restoring the Principles of Limited Government

We Need to Narrow the Scope of State Government

State Government spending has increased 39% between 1998 and 2008. This behavior is unsustainable, and has led to our present financial problems. We need to reduce spending and narrow the scope of our government—define our responsibilities and stick to them.

Our state leaders put capital bills ahead of balanced budgets, pet projects ahead of education and Medicaid bills, and special interest ahead of ethics reform. They ignore the serious problems facing our state.

We need to get the basics right.
